Fun Family Games in FLow

Life should never be boring. One of the reasons why people get bored with their lives is because they don’t have any hobbies. Being action taker is much more fun than being a spectator. Having something to do is much more fulfilling, than doing nothing. Any form of activity can get you lost in the moment.

Getting lost in the moment can also be called flow. Flow is a word used to describe the feeling we get when something takes a certain amount of challenge and skill. Being in flow is one form of happiness. In Mihaly Csikezentmihalyi book Flow, he says

“The best moments usually occur when a person’s body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile.” (Csikezentmihalyi,

Everyone at some point in their lives has experienced flow. Flow can be experienced in sports, music, meditation, socializing, gardening, writing, and much more. Depending on what activity you do, it can drastically improve your health. Sports are probably the most favorable activity. Its very rare to find someone who never played a sport. Kids naturally like to run and play around without being told to. The best part of the day is always recess. Soccer players run on average 7.5 miles a game (Gizmo), but since they are in flow, they don’t even notice nor care. Finding something you like to do physically, is a fun and easy way to maintain health.

How you ever ask yourself why video games are so addicting? “A video game is an electronic game that involves human interaction with a user interface to generate visual feedback on a video device such as a TV screen or computer monitor.”(wiki).

Video game is nothing but pressing a couple of buttons on a controller or a video screen and yet people spend hours playing it. Video games are a multi-billion dollar industry. The only reason why people play it is because it puts them in flow. Nobody would play a game if it is too easy. This is why video games have levels, once you beat the first level you go on the next and the next. Each level brings a new challenge and requires more skill for you to accomplish it. Another reason why it’s fun is because you can play it with others. You can play with someone who is half way around the world or someone who sitting right next to you.

30 Day Expriement

For the next 30 days, do an activity that involves the whole family. Make it fun enough so everyone has something to do.

For example:

  • Play guitar hero or rock band together
  • Schedule a game night and play Uno or Scrabble
  • Go to an art store and create some paintings
  • Play a game of basketball and get smoothies afterwards
  • Find out who is the best at mini golf

The point of these activities is so that everyone in the family can have fun and get lost in the moment. Having fun memories are the times we never forget.
